380 Mile Range on Compressed Natural Gas
DO Not attempt this at home (or perhaps you should)!
Driving 380 miles on an 8 gallon equivalent tank of natural gas is not something an amateur should attempt—it requires concentration and patience that many drivers do not use consistently. However, the rewards can be great. Would you or someone you know drive this way for $128 per hour?
The Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival bike race has been an annual ritual for me for the last 6 years, and my wife and son have been participating in the Northwoods Mountain Biking Adventure for the last two. We are fortunate to have friends that invested in a cabin near Hayward, Wisconsin. The cabin is 190 miles from La Crosse, making the round trip 380 miles. To begin the trip I refueled my 2006 Honda Civic GX Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV) at my business, International Motorwërks. I then patiently drove 380 miles to the cabin and back for less than $10 in natural gas! One of our cycling friends from La Crosse commented on the $130 in gasoline that it cost them to make the round trip.
Since I was driving 3 miles per hour under the speed limit rather than 4 miles per hour over the limit, it allowed me an additional 52 minutes to enjoy the beauty of the Northwoods of Wisconsin. If you do the math, that comes out to $128 per hour savings!
